Who was Mr. Wetherby and what memories did Mr. Chips carry of him ? 

Answer :-

Mr. Wetherby was Head of the Brook-field school when Mr. Chips joined it in 1870. Chips remembered dearly how Wetherby had welcomed him warmly in his study. He also remembered his advice to him about the need to teach well and to maintain (keep) discipline in classes. Now Wetherby gave him chance to live better and make his future bright.

What passed between Mr. Wetherby  and Mr. chips during the interview ?

Answer :- 

 Mr. Wetherby  welcomed Mr. Chips in his study. He told him that he (Chips) was a young man and Brook-field was an old institution to  which he should give his youthful energy. He asked him to give his best to it and maintain (keep) discipline. He should teach with full feeling and interest. But he should not allow any student to play tricks with him. "Take up a firm attitude from the beginning." Mr. Chips was very submissive to him and accepted what he said.
